Please see below for a comment from Brian Whittle MSP following the announcement that Boris Johnson will resign as leader of the UK Conservative Party later today (7th July).
“I’m glad that Boris Johnson has finally accepted that he couldn’t possibly remain in office after the string of poor decisions he has made in recent months. He made some good decisions at the height of the pandemic and around the UK’s swift and strong support for Ukraine, but those cannot excuse his repeated errors of judgement on issues like support for MPs accused of unacceptable behaviour and parties in Downing Street during lockdown.
We should now move quickly to restore stability to the government and appoint a new leader who can draw a line under Boris Johnson’s time as Prime Minister. The last election delivered a big majority for the Conservative Party, and I still believe that the Conservative Party are best placed to lead the UK through this cost-of-living crisis and deliver the change the country needs.
It’s time for a return to the kind of ambitious, practical leadership that focusses on the issues that matter most - dealing with the cost-of-living crisis and strengthening the economy, investing in our infrastructure, recovering from the pandemic, moving towards net-zero and standing up for Scotland’s place in the United Kingdom.
As we begin the search for a new leader of the UK Conservative Party and Prime Minister, I look forward to hearing how the candidates propose to deliver on those ambitions and improve the lives of people across the UK, including in my South Scotland Region.”
