Brian Whittle MSP has accused the Scottish Government of being determined to “grind Scotland to a halt” after the SNP announced a consultation on cutting the national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on single carriageway roads.
The Scottish Government announced their plans following a pilot programme to increase HGV speed limits up to 50mph, but their consultation on this change has said that at the same time they want to cut the limit for cars. The government have also been criticised for the design of their consultation which forces people to choose between either supporting both speed limit changes or neither of them.
Scottish Conservative MSP Brian blasted the plans, saying it was yet another example of the SNP making life harder for drivers. The MSP recently criticised the Scottish Government on their lack of support for councils to make road repairs and has long campaigned for improvements to trunk roads across the South West including the A77 and A75.
Brian urged the public to make their voice heard and object to the plans for a 50mph limit for cars both through the Scottish Government’s consultation and signing the Scottish Conservatives campaign petition against the plans.

Brian said:
“Scotland’s roads have never been a priority for the SNP in government and this latest brainwave to cut speed limits is just the latest example of the disdain they have for motorists.
Years of underinvestment in roads has meant they are less safe and led to more accidents, but instead of doing what it takes to fix these problems, their solution is to add to the pain for drivers with lower speed limits.
The Scottish Government’s cynical decision to tie the lower car speed limit to the higher one for HGVs in their consultation shows that there’s only one outcome they want and it’s the worst one for drivers.
I hope people across South Scotland will respond to the consultation and support the Scottish Conservatives campaign to reject this 50mph cut and tell the SNP to stop grinding Scotland to a halt.”
