Local MSP Brian Whittle has paid a visit to Kilmarnock’s Brownings the Bakers as part of Scottish Apprenticeship week.
During his visit, Brian sat down with boss John Gall to chat about how the business looks to recruit new talent and help them build careers within the company. Established in 1945, Brownings has grown into one of Scotland’s largest bakery businesses, supplying Tattie Scones, Empire Buiscuits, rolls and a host of other products to major supermarkets and stores throughout the UK.
The business has grown rapidly in recent years through contracts with supermarkets and the ever increasing popularity of its iconic, award-winning, Kilmarnock Pie, and now it’s looking to recruit more staff, from apprentices to managers.
The theme of this year’s Scottish Apprenticeship week is “Apprenticeships Work”, and aims to highlight how apprenticeships provide the skills employers need now and in the future.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
“It was great to make another visit to Brownings and catch up with John and the team. East Ayrshire has long had challenges with high unemployment and it’s businesses like Brownings who can offer people a great launch-pad for a whole range of careers.
Apprenticeships are a great way for anyone to get experience of the workplace and earn an income while learning new skills. Not every great career begins with four years at university. Success can come from many places and apprenticeships offer a wide range of opportunities and experiences.
There are real benefits for employers too, giving them the chance to recruit and train staff with the skills they need.
For anyone looking to set out on a successful, interesting career, an apprenticeship with a company like Brownings is well worth considering.”
Skills Development Scotland Chair and Scottish Apprenticeship Advisory Board Co-Chair Frank Mitchell said:
“When it comes to supporting sustainable skills through workforce development or providing opportunities for young people, we know that apprenticeships work.
“The combination of commitment from employers and the backing of Scottish Government will ensure apprenticeships work for everyone, making a significant contribution to Scotland’s recovery and productivity growth.”
