Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP for South Scotland Brian Whittle says the number of domestic abuse cases in East Ayrshire is “shocking”.
Brian’s comments come after new statistics showed domestic abuse cases across Scotland had reached another record high, having risen for the fifth year in succession.
In East Ayrshire the number of domestic abuse cases per 100,000 stood at 128, significantly above the Scottish average of 119 per 100,000.
Brian says by effectively ending a ban on prison sentences of less than 12 months, the SNP have given Scotland a weak justice system that means many domestic abusers are avoiding jail.
According to Brian, the Scottish Conservatives would always put the interests of victims first through their planned Victims Law.
Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP Brian Whittle said “The number of domestic abuse cases in East Ayrshire is absolutely shocking.
“Every single one of these cases is a stain on our society. The SNP’s weak justice policies contribute to these figures by ensuring many abusers escape jail sentences.
“This policy is allowing many of these criminals to re-offend and terrorise victims.
“It is time for the SNP Justice Secretary, Keith Brown, to start putting the interests of victims first, instead of the interests of criminals.
“I am proud to support Scottish Conservative plans for a Victims Law, which will ensure victims are at the heart of our justice system.”
