South Scotland MSP Brian Whittle has responded to the First Minister’s latest announcement that Scotland will now move to Phase 2 of reopening from lockdown.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
“While I’m pleased that all our collective efforts to suppress COVID-19 are allowing us to keep moving forward with easing lockdown restrictions, these latest steps are a mixed bag.
Any further opportunity to meet up with friends and family is welcome and I know those who have been shielding will feel the benefit most of all. But at the same time, there’s real disappointment that many shops and outdoor businesses have to wait even longer to reopen. Hospitality businesses hoping to make use of outdoor spaces, like beer gardens, will also be frustrated at being told to keep waiting without a firm date to reopen.
Similarly, while reopening for zoos and garden attractions is welcome, continuing to limit people to travelling up to 5 miles for recreation, means most people will still unable to visit places like Culzean Castle or Dumfries House if they reopen to the public.
Reopening from lockdown was always going to be a difficult balancing act. I understand the First Minister’s desire to be cautious, but the longer that some big sections of the economy remain closed, the more people’s livelihoods are at risk. That comes with its own threats to people’s health and well-being.
I recognise the risks of reopening too quickly, but we need to be equally aware of the consequences of reopening too slowly and right now I’m not sure the Scottish Government have got that balance right.”
