Brian Whittle MSP has welcomed a decision by the Royal Bank of Scotland to retain a cash machine in Maybole.
Earlier this year the bank announced it would be removing the ATM following the closure of the branch in 2015. But now the bank has changed course following a public outcry.
The South Scotland MSP had been in contact with RBS following the closure announcement and has been pushing for the bank to try and find a solution.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
“I’m delighted the Royal Bank of Scotland have listened to the concerns of the community and found a way to retain their cash machine in the town. The loss of a local branch can be difficult enough for a community to deal with, but losing a cash machine makes a bad situation worse.
While many of us are using cards and contactless payments more than cash, many people still prefer to pay with hard currency and it’s important they aren’t left having to choose between spending less or holding lots of cash because they can’t get to a machine as often.
I’ll continue to work with the Royal Bank of Scotland to ensure people throughout the area continue to receive a good service, no matter how they choose to bank. I hope the Royal Bank of Scotland will learn from this case and try to retain their cash machine network as far as they can.”
