Brian Whittle MSP has paid tribute to the staff and volunteers working at Hansel following a recent visit. The South Scotland MSP sat down with a number of staff from the Symington based social care provider before being given a tour of the facilities on offer to visitors and residents, who have a range of learning disabilities.
In the 50 years since it was founded, Hansel’s Broadmeadows site beside the A77 has become a local landmark and Hansel Foundation has become an Ayrshire asset whose name is recognised across Scotland.
During his visit, Brian heard how Hansel’s work has grown and evolved over the years. The organisation has transformed in recent years and moved away from being predominantly a residential centre, becoming a provider for a wider range of social care support choices. It still offers residential and respite care but now a majority of its work is with people who live across Ayrshire and beyond; providing care and support within people’s own homes and communities. The Broadmeadows site now plays host to a wide range of facilities for people with learning disabilities, including supported work in a number of social enterprises operated by Hansel including “Lindy’s” Tearoom.
Hansel now employs around 480 people across Ayrshire to deliver its services.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
“My memories of Hansel go all the way back to when they used to mow the grass roofed buildings so it was fantastic to be able to visit and see how Hansel has changed to keep up with the modern demands in social care.
Hansel’s commitment to giving people with learning difficulties high quality support tailored to their needs, offering them more control and greater choice in their lives is hugely impressive. The passion and care that the staff at Hansel have for what they do really shines through and I look forward to helping them to keep doing their work in the years to come.”
Gerry Lindsay, Managing Director, Hansel added:
“We are delighted that Brian was able to take time out of his very busy schedule to visit. To be acknowledged and recognised for our work throughout the community means a great deal to our team members and many who volunteer their time for Hansel.
The organisation supports over 600 people and their families throughout Ayrshire each year, providing vital support and community connections for a wide range of people living with support needs. We are very proud of our valued team’s continuing commitment, improving outcomes for people, their families and carers who choose to access our services.”
