Local MSP Brian Whittle has been in touch with bosses at Costa Coffee after the company announced a nationwide consultation over possible job losses at the chain.
Scottish Conservative MSP Brian contacted Costa to clarify how their announcement that up to 1650 jobs across the business were under threat as the company tries to recover from the impact of lockdown.
Responding to his concerns, Costa have confirmed that none of the local stores in the area are under threat but that it is consulting on the single Assistant Manager role in each store. Costa have pledged to do all they can to find alternative jobs within the business for those affected and provide support to transition to new employment for anyone who loses their job.
They also told Brian what they had taken steps to minimise redundancies by re-opening stores as quickly as possible, freezing pay increases in the business for anyone apart from Costa store team members and cutting all non-essential spending.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
“While I’m pleased that Costa have confirmed that no local stores are under threat of closure, the loss of any jobs on our high streets is disappointing news.
The UK Government’s furlough scheme has helped to protect countless jobs across Scotland during the pandemic but it’s clear there are still big challenges ahead for our economy.
Covid-19 hasn’t gone away but we cannot afford to take our eye off the ball when it comes to helping businesses adapt and recover and giving people the new skills and training they need to find employment.
I’m determined to work with businesses in the area to get Ayrshire’s economy back on its feet and protect jobs across the area”
