Brian Whittle MSP has been shining a spotlight on south west Scotland’s road and rail network as part of a UK wide review of vital transport links.
Shortly before Christmas, Brian and his Scottish Conservative colleague, Finlay Carson MSP, submitted a joint letter to the review. The MSPs highlighted the importance of the A77, A75 and Glasgow South Western Rail Line as being of particular importance for trade between Northern Ireland and the UK mainland.
The UK Government commissioned the independent Union Connectivity Review to look at how transport can support economic growth and improve the quality of life across the UK. Led by Sir Peter Hendy, the Chair of Network Rail, the review is expected to publish an interim report in January, with final recommendations coming in the summer.
The Scottish Government have refused to engage with the review arguing that transport is a devolved issue, but Brian believes this approach is short-sighted. He also criticised the SNP for its failure to invest in the south west during their time in government.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
“Good transport infrastructure is vital for the economy and communities across Scotland. By investing in south west Scotland’s transport links, we can not only strengthen our links with other parts of the UK, but also make life better for communities across the area.
For years, the SNP have failed to take the need for better road and rail links in south west Scotland seriously. Now, when there’s an opportunity to work collaboratively with the UK Government to deliver investment that can benefit Scotland, they refuse to participate. It’s a short sighted move that’s pure political posturing.
The Union Connectivity Review is an opportunity to secure investment that our rail services and roads like the A77 urgently need. That’s why Finlay Carson and I made the effort to contribute it. If the SNP were genuinely committed to the south west, they would have done the same.”
