Following successful bids by East and South Ayrshire Councils for funding from the Spaces for People programme, a local MSP is encouraging the public to have their say on where the money is spent.
South Scotland MSP Brian Whittle wants the public to comment on consultations both councils are holding. East Ayrshire Council has secured £555,000 and South Ayrshire £510,000 to invest in temporary infrastructure projects aimed at making it easier for people who walk, wheel or cycle during COVID-19.
Among the proposals are new and expanded cycle lanes, removal of parking spaces to give pedestrians more space, improved physical distancing measures at bus stops and closing roads around schools.
Brian Whittle MSP said:
“While the car will always be a vital mode of transport for some, many of us have discovered the benefits of walking or cycling for shorter, local journeys. As well as being a bit of useful light exercise, it means fewer cars on the road, which is no bad thing for the environment.
This consultation is an opportunity for everyone who uses our streets, whether you’re a walker, wheeler, cyclist or even a driver, to think about the changes councils could make to streets in the area to make things better for everyone.”
