Local Scottish Conservative MSP Brian Whittle is urging the SNP to invest £200 million in a Pothole Fund to clear up the ‘plague of potholes’ blighting local roads.
The South Scotland MSP’s call comes after the Scottish Conservatives revealed figures which show the number of potholes reported since the SNP came to power in 2007 has increased five-fold.
In 2007, when the SNP entered office, just 3981 potholes were reported. By 2020-21, that number had risen to 20,988.
Brian said the figures show the scale of the decline in roads in South Scotland under the SNP and challenged them to get serious about improving Scotland’s transport infrastructure.
Brian Whittle MSP said: “These figures lay bare the decline in the state of roads in South Scotland since the SNP came to power.
“Our roads are plagued by potholes and issues are getting worse all the time.
My fellow Scottish Conservative MSPs and I are calling for a £200 million national Pothole Fund during this parliament so councils can take action to improve our local roads.
The condition of our roads under the SNP is only getting worse and that has to change.
It’s time to invest in Scotland’s local road and trunk road networks to help the economy recover from the pandemic and end the scourge of pothole damage for drivers.”
